TREVOR JONES: Well..."Stories We Could Tell" came out in August. It was well received and gathered us many new friends, both home and abroad. We do seem to be in a familiar loop of recording/release/great reviews/low sales/recording... So in an effort to break the cycle, Marcus and I decided we'd release a single. A first for Miracle Mile. Not as an assault on the charts, but as an effort to improve our profile (christ, you can tell that I've been talking to promoters!) by trying to garner some much needed airplay. There is so much stuff being released now that it must be difficult for programmers to wade through and select albums that they like, and then choose tracks to play, so...we decided on a single, 'Mystery to Me' as a calling card for the stations, this will hopefully get them into the album. We have employed a well regarded 'Plugger' who will work the single, presenting it to Radio producers and DJs. The whole marketing process is alien to me, so we have to respect the wisdom and judgements of the experts, even if it does involve me taking my hands off the wheel. I'm not happy with the idea of editing the song into a neat consumerable three and a half minutes but can understand the constraints of formatting. The single is released Feb 28, to be preceded (on the 27th we think) by a feature with Mark Edwards in the Sunday Times.
Marcus and I have also started work on new recordings. It's going so well that we think it might be finished by the Summer. We need to add pedal steel (Melvin Duffy and BJ Cole) Brass (Chris Bachelor) and Woodwind (Simon Currie) and some percussion (hopefully Danny Cummings and Luis Conte). Max and I thought some might be interested in the recording process so, here is a rough diary that I'll update from time to time. I'm hoping that Marcus might contribute stuff for the more technically inclined.
MARCUS CLIFFE: for the technically inclined, we record onto hard disk (who doesn't nowadays) using Steinberg's NUENDO software on to my own built rack mounted PC's using Lynx technology AD/DA. I have Hafler TB8 powered monitors for stereo and a Tannoy reveal5.1 monitoring system for surround. We did think about mixing the last album for surround but I'm not sure there is a big enough market for it yet, let us know if you feel otherwise.
