If you are into grand cinematic sounds, then check out Rob Dougan. He is Craig Armstrong with an edge although I shouldn’t compare the two as their music is quite different but similar genre – classical, pop, electronic and the difference is Rob’s music is dramatic and Craig is mellow. I first noticed Rob Dougan on the MTV with his unique video and I couldn’t quite appreciate the music by just watching the video but there was something curious to it. It was not until I was in New York and came across the Limited edition of Furious Angels. A double CD beautifully packaged with great photography. I took a chance and grabbed it and never regretted it. Disc 1 has an added bonus track of “Clubbed To Death 2”. It is a version different from the Kurayamino Variation that we are familiar with from “The Matrix” soundtrack. It is an excellent version and I believe you can only get it from this limited edition. Disc 2 is purely instrumental and this is where you can get to appreciate the music in its full glory without Rob’s “croaky” voice. The music is expansive, eclectic, atmospheric and beautiful. You either love or hate Rob’s voice. Someone described it to me as “messy” but I would describe it is an acquired taste and I grew to love that deep, throaty voice after a few listen. It is rather sexy actually. I got the CD in New York but I never had time to listen to it properly until a month later and then it hit me, what a real gem and it has remained largely undiscovered – even better! “Clubbed To Death” is not THE only great song from the CD. There are others - “One and The Same”, “There Is Only Me”, “Drinking Song” and “Nothing At All”, which without a doubt should make it to Rainsound’s Hall of Fame.“Drinking Song” is probably my sentimental favorite because it is a clever song. It disguises itself as a melancholic song with very poetic lyrics but towards the end, the song bursts into a little waltz that takes you by surprise and gives you such a spiritual lift that you feel good after listening to it.“Furious Angels” has been an inspiration and if anything, it has made my spirits soar whenever I listen to it.
