I have always loved the Doves because of their dark and moody tunes and to die for guitar sounds! Well, this is the “brightest” music that they have ever done so far – totally accessible! If before, you can’t quite sing or hum to the tunes of their music because it is so un-commercialized, with “Some Cities” the songs make you want to stomp your feet or snap your fingers to them and the tunes stick to your head. That is very unusual for Doves music. I am beginning to wonder what phase of their lives are the Doves going through to inspire such music. It is different from their earlier works and although more accessible it doesn’t mean it is bland pop. The Doves trademark is still there and each and every song is strong on its own and the catchiest of tunes are no doubt “Black And White Town” which is also the first single and “Sky Starts Falling”. The CD version I have is a Special CD with DVD Edition and the DVD includes a documentary of the “Cities Under Construction” and a directors cut of the Black and White Town” video and a photo gallery. The DVD gives you an insight as to how 3 men can create a lot of sound and great music in just their living room or cramped spaces. The most beautiful and haunting of them all is “Ambition” which was written and recorded in a Benedictine Church and if you have the DVD, you would be able to enjoy the instrumental music of “Ambition” with some haunting guitar works and it is just mesmerizing. I would hate for Doves to become mainstream but this CD might just gain them many more new fans! |
