O

The opening lyrics of the song "Blower's Daughter" from "O". The cover of the CD reminds me of the movie "The Ring" as it has got a caricature of this long haired girl where the hair covers half of her face but the music is far from macabre. In fact the music to me is as though it came out of a DH Lawrence novel initially. It has that feel of some bleak northern part of England, small mining mining town in fact, nothing dramatic or glamorous but subtle and eloquent and relationships that is reminiscent of a DH Lawrence novel. The texture is simple with only guitar and some strings - it is a good CD to listen to when you are recovering from a hangover because it is gentle on the ears. However, if you have seen the movie "Closer" - the "Blower's Daughter" is featured as the opening song and it totally changes the earlier perception of DH Lawrence and suddenly the music is 21st Century. It gives a different texture to his songs. I now listen to the "Blower's Daughter with the image of Clive Owen looking intensely at Natalie Portman as if he is peeling off her clothes with his eyes....."I can't take my eyes off of you".

Putting aside the movie and all other conjectures, "O" is breathless, the music speaks for itself as it lays itself bare with basic instruments and simple lyrics. If you are listening to it under a moonlit night with the stars sparkling in the sky like diamonds, it just takes your breath away. It certainly had that effect on me as I brought it along with me to Africa and the sky in Africa is a stunning piece of "light show". The sunsets and sunrises are something to behold and Cold Water, Cannonball or even Blower's Daughter are perfect soundtracks to such an atmospheric moment. Top it up with a stunning setting of shimmering lakes at sunset, misty mornings at sunrise and beautiful impalas, giraffes and zebras running around in the most beautiful of sanctuaries as if they are animals from some fairy tale, "O" is just dreamy.
