Much has been said about Blue Nile’s High already ie the 8 year wait, how great the songwriting still is, how great PB’s voice is, the endearing lyrics…etc, etc. Here’s another review if you are not already tired reading about it.

I am not so much a lyrics person, I only pick up certain words here and there but I am a big melodies person when it comes to music and if the lyrics are something that I could relate to, then it gets my attention. What Blue Nile does so well to me is in their melodies. It does something to you even when you can’t relate to the lyrics.

"I Would Never" is their first single from the album and when I first heard it, it was the single version as the CD was not out yet until the next day. So, I couldn't wait and bought the single first the day before. The cover of the single is a picture of 3 summer hats against a blue background. The cover itself evokes a summery feel and when I listen to it, I see images of being by the sea, a seaside port with gentle waves and drifting along to some distant place. When the song goes “when the sun is going down”, for me it brings back memories of beautiful sunsets in Africa where it is not just stunning but the silence and peacefulness against nature. Emotionally, the song reminds me of all the married men that I have loved…with baggage!

"Broken Love" and "She Saw The World" actually reminds me of my footsteps as I walked the streets of London on a hot summer’s day in August being inspired by the movie “Motorcyle Diaries”. The rhythm of my footsteps was to the beat of the synthesizers that was like the rhythm of life beating. The music is building up in anticipation of something, which the movie tried to allude to in terms of Che’s life. As the young “Che”, he had that innocence of youth and how he embraced the beauty and “darkness” of Latin America and was totally inspired from thereon.

"Because of Toledo" is a melancholy song with lyrics that reminds you of some cowboy in Toledo. The verse "where the women that you love sometimes are the water that you drink" makes me reflect on the sacrifices that men sometimes make for the women in their lives. Sometimes it pains them but because the women are like the water that they drink - they live with it and they are forgiving about it and I think it is a beautiful and honorable thing for a man to do.

"High" is so romantic - I see two people in bed in darkness and getting "high" ;-) Simple as that. It has the same effect as "Let's Go Out Tonight" as whenever I listen to that song, I see silhouettes in the darkness and just being intense about each other.

"Stay Close" - I like this song too as it has that haunting melody of pining or longing for someone. Excruciatingly, painful feeling.

The CD reminds me what made me love Blue Nile in the first place. It is even more special because it was the soundtrack of my life when I was in London last August after a great trip to Africa and having experienced some of the most amazing experiences, it was certainly the icing on the cake that encapsulates the “high” that I felt at that point in time
